it was the second protest gathering for us yesterday ... i was weary ... i really didn't want to use up what was left of a lovely autumn day holding my sign and being blasted with gas fumes and rolling coal from pissed off Red Hats flipping the bird and screaming obscenities out their big truck windows...
there are positive horn honkers and thumbs-uppers and peace-signers and wavers - many, MANY more of them than there are of the jerks - but the jerks are the ones i remember when it's time to leave - ugly leaves a nasty stain
but this one was about resisting the lawless cruelty that ICE is inflicting on ALL OF US, especially the most vulnerable ... so i pulled into the Home Depot parking lot, parked the car and got our signs about immigration out of the trunk ... i wanted to be anywhere else...
i heard a quiet voice say...
"i paint rocks."
she pulled two rocks out of her jeans pockets and handed one to each of us...
Melissa's rock
my rock
how did she know what each of us needed to hear?!?
her random act of kindness changed everything for the remainder of the day ... i was still weary and the jerks still acted like jerks - but freedom lies in being bold ... and the Constitution cannot uphold itself
just sayin'
