despair was everywhere, as far as my eyes could see...
and then Thing One started making noise about Canada (our northern neighbor, trade partner, and constant ally) being absorbed as the 51st state ... he seemed to think it amusing to refer to (then Prime Minister) Justin Trudeau as "Governor Trudeau" and to threaten to place tariffs on everything that the US imports from Canada...
and then he did...
and then he didn't...
and then he did...
threats and tantrums and more tantrums and threats
it's futile to try keeping track of the tacoing
he doesn't seem to give a goodgawddamn about how We the People feel about Canada, free trade or tariffs, imports and exports, being good neighbors and allies, just wanting to live our lives without newly manufactured problems and their ensuing crises slapping us in the face every damnday ... it has become a $h!t $h0w of a circus - with the elephant poop piling up higher and higher - that won't be leaving town for forever days, weeks, months, years
Canada has not reacted by bending the knee and kissing his a$$ ring ... they've moved ahead and moved along
in the meantime...
beautiful red and neutral fabrics from Northcott (a Canadian company) were ordered from (mostly) Canadian on-line quilt shops, along with the pattern for the 150 Canadian Women quilt (a block-of-the-week-piece-along to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017)
and a new journey (to count down the weeks until Thing One's circus leaves town) has begun...
we didn't have enough any red scraps for scrappy quilts, so we ordered yardage - lots of yardage...
and covered a three-ring notebook to bind the patterns' charts and notes
the plan is for each of us to piece a 6" block every sunday morning
whilst eating pancakes or waffles with lottsa maple syrup
and listening to Celine Dion and Neil Young and Gordon Lightfoot and Alanis Morrisette (although i still don't agree with her on what is or is not ironic) and The Guess Who (cuz, you know, we're American women) and Buffy Sainte Marie (even if) and Anne Murray and Joni Mitchell...
elbows up...
